The worst hotel in the world (18-19/Aug/06)

Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela

Left Isla de Margarita to go back to the mainland, to Cumana. Not an inspiring town, made even less palatable if you happen to be in its worst (though the cheapest) hotel on account of a junior league baseball match filling up all the rest. Not so much dirty, more of an air of decay and absolute dinginess which suggest filth. But the saving grace was a free "opera's greatest hits" concert on at the theatre which we went to and quite enjoyed. It's been some time we needed a dose of culture. After that we had a lovely meal of 2 hot-dogs and went to our U-shaped bed.

The next day we got up early to go to the Cave of the Guacharo, about 4 hours away. The guacharo is a type of bird that lives in caves and has a sonar system like bats. This cave has the biggest known population of this species, about 18000. It's a pretty huge cave, though the guacharos only live in the first cavern. You go in over a kilometre into the cave with a guide, though the cave is over 10km in length. We then went back to Cumana (a feat said to be impossible by public transport), though it would have been pretty cool to camp there to see the amazing sight of all the guacharos leave the cave around 7pm. And from there back to the beach, to Santa Fe (bus breakdown included).
